So after the recent addition of LOTJ playset that I am thrilled with and again cannot thank EOC enough for the wonderful gesture, I thought I would put a little info up for anyone interested.
I am a complete amateur on researching and this is my first basic attempt, but there is some initial and interesting info around the playset.

My newfound love of baggies as well links into this due to the piece being released with the Jawa baggie.

I am over the moon with the piece added to my collection

Enjoy.......

The LOTJ Playset is one which a lot of collectors seem to stumble on to as the other playsets such as the Death Star and Hoth and Sears Cantina all seem to take the limelight, but in terms of collecting the LOTJ playset becomes a piece that collectors want, there are variations on the set and nuisances between them so I have put a little information together as below

Kenner Land of the Jawas playset

Interestingly The base of the playset was remoulded in white and reused in the ESB Hoth Ice Planet and Sears Exclusive Rebel Command Centre.

Kenner Canada had two special offers on this playset, in 1979 as a Sears Wishbook Exclusive, and packed in a carded Jawa Action figure in 1980, and as a K Mart exclusive a 41 back carded Yoda figure was packed, both offers promoted by unique stickers on the front.

UK Palitoy offered a different version that featured unique packaging that set the land of the jawas in the desert at night, produced in low numbers and very hard to find.

Canada Kenner released exclusively by Sears via the Sears Christmas Wishbook 1979 1980
This included the JAWA figure baggie with the yellow SO sticker sticker on the front.

This is the little treasure that I have been fortunate enough to add to my little collection, thrilled with 8)

One of may favourite playsets, spent lots of hours with this as a kid. Thanks for putting a lovely post together on it, I particularly like the catalogue.

Looks like a cool playset. Never had this as a kid. Looking to get a Palitoy one some day.

Great info Michael. There is a great advert for this in Star Wars Weekly. I'll scan and post it here.

I'd not seen the Seers Wish catalogue before - can I use your pic on my diecast site?

Great post Mike very informative mate, dumbstruck at that stunner you have it's the bomb buddy.

FYI the palitoy version also came with a baggie, usually a palitoy baggies, but it has turned up several times with the same SW-a Kenner baggie, presumable before palitoy had their own stock of baggies ;)

A very nice post indeed. Thanks for sharing.

After the Palitoy Death Star, my favourite playset was always the Palitoy Land of the Jawas as a child. I liked and owned the Palitoy Cantina too, but the Land of the Jawas simply appealed to me more. For me, I could always do more with it; relive the Jawas capturing R2-D2, the purchase of the droids by Luke, it had a cool lift to raise R2-D2 up into the Sandcrawler, and I could also hide C-3PO and the other droids in there too! :)

I can still recall the lady in Ware Toy Shop pulling the box from the top shelf and opening it to show an excited 6-year-old me the wondrous contents held inside! Yep, back then if you asked to see the thing you were buying before you handed over your cash, some shops would let you :-D

BTW, I have a boxed Palitoy Land of the Jawas (and boxed Palitoy Droid Factory) that I will be selling on this forum shortly, if anyone's interested.

Nice to see the Sears catalogue with the special offer Death Star :)

...and snaketibe, I'm looking for a Palitoy droid factory and land of the jawas to complement my Palitoy cantina and death stars, if you're thinking of selling them, let me know condition, price, etc.

Cheers,

Andy

Interesting.

I've never owned one and never knew about the differences. I love the Palitoy 'at night' box which reminds me of the Pali Landspeeder. Am I right in thinking that in having a different base, the Pali one is made of very thin plastic a la Cantina?

Palitoy version had no escape pod, no indent on the base for the escape pod, the cave section is not present on the Palitoy version and the action lever again is not present, and yes the plastic base is flimsier.

It's an item i used to covet from pictures when I was a kid. It might have brought disappointment with it being cardboard. It makes a great display piece for a 42 year old collector tho.
