I've been building a collection of loose variants, but it struck me that there was nothing definitive to aim for so wondered if it was creating a first 12 / last 17 type standardised list of loose variants that a collector could aim for. It would be interesting to see what people think of the idea and what they would put in it. I'd go

-Luke DT (Ben DT and Darth DT too rare and unobtainable)
-VCJ
-R2 Pop up
-Tri logo Boba
-Lili Ledy Bib Burgundy Cape
-Dark Brown Rebel Soldier
-Squid Head Red Cape
-Snap Cape Luke Jedi, blue sabre
-R5 D$ red square

Would anybody add any / take any off?

There are a few lists floating around - there's a list on here somewhere which I'll try to find

Standardised is where it gets difficult as every collector will have different wants and needs

Personally I've absolutely no interest in a red bar R4 but I do like the different hair colour Luke variants. As such a list of what makes a 'variant collection' is a bit subjective

It's very hard to pin point a standard list as there's so many avenues to go down.

I started pretty basic:

Hollow tubes Tusken
Smooth and Rough cape Jawa
Brown and Yellow hair Luke FB
Large and Small head Han...

But as your collection grows so do the perimeters of what you define as variant. I briefly dipped my toe into the water with foreign production figures, Glasslite and Ledy but some of the higher end figures put me off going any further.

I now keep to basic Kenner production variants and European figures with the exception of Poch.

Poncho, that's a good list - but even as long as it is there are still many omissions.

Red Bar R5... oh my, oh my...

Whenever I see something about this variant - and if you go on facebook you'll see a lot about it - I have to smile.

It's become the poster child 'variant' for noobie collectors, and I suspect that 90% of them probably don't know there is another variant R5 that has different molding and a smaller head (to me a major mold difference 'big head / small head' is far more significant), and they probably also don't know just how many sticker variants there are.

R2_Sticker2.jpg

If the red bar is the gateway drug to get new collectors into variants, then that's cool, but please don't try and tell me that "groupthink" makes it a £100 plus figure because I don't buy it!! :D

There is so many variants and if you will go very deep into variants then you can put 2000+ figures on the list

Hollow tubes tusken would be a good addition. Tough ask I know and so many variants , but a small popular list might be a good thing to have for people like me to aim for. Really appreciate all input.

Back in 2001 I was a variant collector although never bothered with specific COO's this was the list i thought important at the time (ie years before red back R5's were dis covered, and Tusken cheek holes was a relatively new one). I found this on Rebelscum forumsand would stick by it today.

Luke Skywalker - DT/Regular sabre
Darth Vader - DT/Regular sabre
Ben Kenobi - DT/Regular sabre
Jawa - Vinyl/Cloth cape
Han Solo - Large/Small head
Snaggletooth - Blue/Red

Luke Skywalker - Yellow/Brown hair
Ben Kenobi - White/Grey hair
Yoda - Orange/Brown snake
Rebel Soldier - light/dark brown
Luke Bespin - Yellow/Brown Hair
Luke Jedi - Blue sabre/Green sabre

Leia Bespin - Unpainted/Painted collar
Luke Bespin - Yellow/Brown hair
Lando Calrissian - No teeth/with teeth
White Bespin Guard - Short/Long 'tache
Ugnaught - Blue/Purple smocks
Admiral Ackbar - Grey/Tan bib
Luke Jedi - Snap/Sewn collar
Klaatu - Thin/Thick skirt
Han Endor - Camo/Plain lapels

Tusken Raider - Solid/Hollow cheek tubes
IG88 - Solid/Hollow eyes
Biker Scout - Small/Large mouth

White Bespin Guard - Short/Long 'tache
Ugnaught - Blue/Purple smocks
Admiral Ackbar - Grey/Tan bib
Luke Jedi - Snap/Sewn collar
Klaatu - Thin/Thick skirt
Han Endor - Camo/Plain lapels

Tusken Raider - Solid/Hollow cheek tubes
IG88 - Solid/Hollow eyes
Biker Scout - Small/Large mouth

I think that's a pretty good list of attainable variants. Don't think the purple smock ugnaught is considered to be a variant though.

I guess I'm a variant collector but not on the scale of some members, I've just collected variants I like the look of...

Moulded head Luke Jedi - blue/green saber - snap/stitched cape
Hollow Tubes Tusken
Tri Logo Fett
Dark armour Rebel Soldier
White Fur Chirpa
Dark Stripes Logray
White/Gray haired Ben
Orange/Brown Snake Yoda
Hollow eyes IG88

There aren't many more I want..... a pale face dark armour Rebel Soldier, Red Bar R5 and to complete the Tri Logo set of Boba's. Trouble is these variants can be an expensive venture.

Good luck if you do venture down this path.

Looking back through old Rebelscum posts I found one from 2000 or so where I was giving heads up to anyone who wanted a Trilogo Fett that there was one hidden in a loose lot for a few quid, I had that many I didn't want any more. All the variants except the DT's, VC Jawa and Blue Snag could be easily found in loose figure lots back then for pennies, including Tusken cheek tubes, dark brown rebel soldier and Ledy Biker Scouts.

There's too many 'variants' to make any standardised list IMO. You have some Kenner variants, obviously, like the R5D4 red bar and snap cape luke jedi, but outside of that you have the manufacturer variants, Ledy, PBP, Poch, glasslite, Uzay, Top toys, Meccano, Takara etc etc

To make a standardised list as a collecting goal would be very hard as people favour different things. Don't get me wrong, I see the point of it, because to have goals in collecting is a good thing, but I don't see a way of creating 'a variant list' akin to first 12, last 17, all 96 that would be applicable for all people who were wanting to explore variants deeper.

What I have done with my CoO variant thread (linked below in orange) is to show people some variants of the same figure so they can maybe start small by exploring their favourite character at first maybe and search for a few variants of that figure, then move on from there once they get an idea if they favour a particular toy line manufacturer or if they just want to explore a handful of their favourite figures variants.

The variant game isn't a cheap one either, So I would always advise anyone looking to delve deeper into variants of standard Kenner figures to do as much research as possible BEFORE buying anything (after all, research is free), and if doubt, ask someone.

Peace
