This surprise's me. I thought half of this scene Yoda doesn't even look like a force ghost, almost like they didn't have time to finish the CGI. And when he hits Luke with his stick, how can he do that he's a spirit? This is one of the scenes where they need George Lucas to step in and say no! Ben as a force ghost can't help Luke but Yoda can start a fire? Like I said in another thread its pointless letting these little things spoil the film. You could argue that Yoda was a more power full Jedi so he has mastered being a spirit more. :?

Yes Poncho I was hoping for a Snoke back story, but I fear he might not be dead. He will probably be in Episode 9 with Darth Maul, but they will have each others legs.

So glad they didn’t make Rey a lost relative of Kenobi, Skywalker, or someone else, and so glad they didn’t make Snoke some reincarnation of Palpatine, Vader or Jarjar. Not everyone needs to be connected with someone else in the universe. The force-sensitive little boy at the end proved that.

Otherwise a very broken plot, way too much action, but some decent performances along the way and the Porgs didn’t spoil it.

TBH it could just be that I was so disheartened by the whole thing by that point that I'd stopped caring. Yoda doing shit Ben couldn't is on a par with Luke doing his ghost thang as well. Never seen either of those powers before. Or Leia doing her survive a massive explosion unscathed and then float through space BS. The Luke bit had more of an influence on the plot than the Yoda bit.

My brother is over nxt week and wants to go and see it, I said I'd go with him based on the few reviews I had heard overviews of, now I wish I hadn't. Either way I'll be watching it a second time. :(

Watched it last night and been spending the day trying to absorb it..

For me.. it's the best of films since the OT.. but does have some really big unanswered questions which may now never be answered.

Who was Snoke ?? From all the force power he was using, he got killed off very quickly. What was his background ??

Leia... they had the perfect scene to kill her off so we can say goodbye... but no... she turned into Mary bloody Poppins !!! How are they going to sort that for Ep9 ?? There are stories Carrie filmed bits already.. but Disney say she will not be CGId in the next film !!

Rey... parents were junk merchants.... Hmmm.. so where does her force connection come from ?

In other areas... Phasma was naff... hopefully killed off good and proper this time.

Lara Dern... not sure what to make of her... fairly stuck up.. but did do herself a favour in the end.

Loved seeing Yoda again...his connection with Luke is still strong.... Plus R2 using the hologram of Leia to get Luke back on track.

And finally.. the death of Luke... very sad to see another major character to go.... but I guess they need to make way for the new guys. His force projection against Kylo was a nice touch and showed just how powerful a Jedi he had become..

I have to admit the Leia Mary Popins scene is possibly the worst bit of cinema ever, I thought someone had slipped something in my Coca Cola when it happened. Some of your comments I can’t stop laughing at, you have to go again, I bet you will say it’s even worse after a second viewing.

My thoughts on The Last Jedi, after some reflection.

I enjoyed it - sort of. I think the reason I haven’t immediately warmed to it is that this is a different sort of Star Wars movie to The Force Awakens, which I really enjoyed. There’s no final battle building to a crescendo and a rousing celebration, in fact the ending is decidedly downbeat, the Resistance decimated and the heroes are left dead, wounded or beaten.

To me, one of the main themes is that nothing will turn out the way we expect. Luke is not the heroic figure we remember, Poe’s actions are misguided and reckless, both Finn and Admiral Holdo spend considerable screen time pursuing plans that end in near disaster, and Rey’s mission to turn Kylo come to nothing. All these hopes are raised, and then dashed.

But there are also new hopes dawning. Luke is not the last Jedi, and Rey’s powers are growing, having resisted the temptations of the dark side. There is also the promise of new Jedi yet to be trained. The Resistance are beaten but survive with the promise of striking back. And all is not lost for Kylo, who could not bring himself to kill his mother, and still has good in him despite his monstrous deeds.

Probably deliberately, this movie echoes The Empire Strikes Back in many ways, both visually and thematically. That was another movie where the heroes got a kicking and the ending was downbeat, but in retrospect stands as a peak of the original trilogy. Maybe with time to reflect this movie has the potential to be seen in similar light.

Sure it has its flaws; there were too many cheap ‘comedy’ moments, some of the characters were wasted (Phasma once again) and there are, as always, some gaping plot holes. Mysteries set up in The Force Awakens were summarily and unsatisfactorily discarded (Snoke‘s back story, and Rey’s parentage, unless Kylo was lying). Chewie, R2 and 3PO weren’t given anything to do (but BB-8 was again a star).

But there were some great performances, especially from Hamill and Fisher, and the scene between them at the end was touching. I didn’t mind Leia in space; she has the Skywalker power of the Force, and once again a nice bit of misdirection thinking that this would be her demise, only for her to return to presumably a fitting end in Episode IX. I can also accept Luke’s death; it was a touching and poignant end, and I can’t imagine what else they might do with such a powerful character in future episodes. Adam Driver as Kylo is magnificent. The new characters didn’t really have time to develop although I did like Rose, and her message that we should protect the things we love, not seek to destroy the things we hate.

I’d like to watch The Last Jedi again and see how my perceptions and impressions might change a second time round. But it’s the first Star Wars movie that’s got me thinking like this and it’s a brave move on the part of Lucasfilm and Disney to take the saga in this direction, rather than the easy option of another crowd pleasing, feelgood romp.

I hope that Episode IX ties the threads together into a satisfying climax to the trilogy, when it can be finally seen as a unified work and each element appreciated in light of the overarching whole. We shall see.

Can’t agree with the ‘great acting’ comments for Mark Hamill. He was fine for some parts but some scenes he was playing Mark Hamill rather than Luke Skywalker.

Mark was much better in ROTJ

Carrie Fisher was ok, but Adam Driver acted everybody off screen. I didn’t like Kylo as a character before this film, so he totally won me round.

Actually, you reminded me of a thought I had, when Luke said Kylo Ren killed most of his pupils and forced others into exile.....what odds on some or all of those forced into exile putting in an appearance in the last film? Tracked down and trained up by Rey, possibly?

Or the opposite if they became the Knights of Ren maybe? Kylo needs a bit of beef behind him, his threat is pretty lightweight at the moment, he needs a posse.

WOW, sometimes I wonder if I'm a fan at all. My opinions always seem to be the opposite to most fans. I thought The Force Awakens was a 5/10, to the point where I tried to watch it for a second time, and could only manage to get half way through. Rogue One was better, getting 6.5-7, then watching again with my wife, 7.5-8.

The Last Jedi - I F***ING loved it. I walked out at the end of the credits, in tears, and thinking it was the best Star Wars film ever made, 9/10.

Yes there were several annoying sections, (but which of any of the previous films didn't?) mostly the CGI characters, which all looked 2005 not 2017. They thankfully made Yoda a physical puppet, and got the design totally spot on to the original trilogy. This was the first time I welled up - Yoda & Luke together - this is Star Wars. Humour was a little off, but not as bad as TFA.

The opening was spot on, right into some space action, and the pace was just right to make you feel panic.

I liked all the twists, to the point where it looked like the writers had scoured the internet, looked for all the predictions (how/if Leia dies, Rey's parentage, etc) and went another way. I thought that was great.

Kylo stopped wearing his helmet - good, it was beginning to go a bit Bain from Batman.

The Benicio Del Torro character at first felt like a scene I'd seen in a dozen other films and TV shows, but actually liked how his story line went. Basically a little dig at the world we live in today, as in, who we think the good guys and the bad guys are, arms sales, dog eat dog etc and he stuck to his character, not turning good at the last minute as is usually the way in these films.

The story of Luke about to kill Kylo was clever - Luke changing his mind and angry at himself, Kylo mistakenly thinking Luke was going to kill him. Both just slipped up, and unfortunately there were consequences.

Yoda showing up and burning the "sacred tree" and rubbishing the Jedi books - YES! I was sick of the force trying to be explained, with physical things, like mediclorians. Yoda brought it back to the mystical thing it always was.

When Luke and Leia meet again was the next time I welled up, big time. A mix of pure nostalgia, and the fact that Carrie is no longer with us.

I could add lots more, but that's most of it. Just really sad it missed the mark for most. It's nice when it's more universal, but that's like any art form, it's subjective. I'm not going to come on here and say "WTF people, you need to go to Specsavers".
