One of my dream jobs would not have been a porn star, a racing driver or even a pilot. No, it would have been head designer in Palitoy's design department, responsible for packaging design and illustration, store displays and promotional items.

As you know, Palitoy produced very little in the way of display merchandise, I'm still to find one of those bloody ESB logo hangers! So in this thread what I want to to is create some point of sale items, packaging variations and even playsets that were never produced but retain that vintage feel.

I'll start with this cardboard 'counter' display for Palitoy's ESB range, featuring the cool Fett illustration from the Capture Log and the ESB toy logo. Also featuring the Palitoy line 'The toys from the film are here'.

I can imagine if this had have been produced back in the 80's, it would have sat where the till is in the shop, or possibly in the window display. And if they were availble, finding one today with the antenna still intact would be a rarity!

I'll be adding new designs and mock ups as I finish them, along with some of Palitoys other lines such as Action Man and Action Force, and some Kenner, Mattel and Mego pieces :)

That's great! It's nice to see someone use their talents to create interesting "what if" pieces instead of repro crap for ££!!

Looking forward to seeing what else you've come up with :)

Looks amazing and spot on for the feel of the era... looks so clean too.

Did you consider using the white for Fetts helmet like it was back then?

I really like the green though, definitely gives it a stronger look.

Also how did you go about the printing, a work perk?

These might be popular display additions to

Thanks for the feedback chaps :) There's plenty more to come and please feel free to add your own ideas/concepts/pics to the thread. Maybe between us we can create something cool.

One of my next projects is to create a cardboard Hoth Echo Base playset. I really hated the Command Centre and Hoth Planet Playset, there was very little play value given that they were re-used from Land Of The Jawas molds.

This would not be some elaborate, highly realistic playset, my remit here is to keep it retro, so just 2 or 3 features but more interesting than what was actually produced. I think maybe a Hoth Wampa cage (similar to the deleted scene) with the sticker on the door, maybe an ice tunnel leading to a command centre and possibly a Bacta Tank for Luke to stand in!

Chubb, Rob & Cazz: I have been asked by several folks if I will be selling these. It is not my intention to turn this into a sales thread BUT I might make some available to SWFUK forum members. Very limited run - signed/numbered/professionally printed and die cut. If there's enough interest I will look into it. I think as a forum exclusive it might work.

As I said before...****ing awesome job on that. Making "What If "pieces is fun. If you do decide to make some for sale, I would be in.

Also...vintage playsets made with the "simple" vintage style are great to make too. Hats off to you.

If I was to critique anything I would say that this could be a tad glossier, but other than that, these look spot on to the old days.

Wow Mark,
This is just really really cool! It seems you are even more talented then we can possibly imagine :)
If this is the start or more to come, well, it's gonna be hard to wait for us, I think many of us are eager to see more!
But beware, you have set the bar pretty high with this one already

Keep it up buddy!

Great work. I would personally make a version with Darth Vader as the main image on the display, if you want to produce a "what if" from Palitoy. People could choose the Fett or Vader or both of them.

It's amazing that Boba Fett was barely mentioned in the publicity leading up to The Empire Strikes Back and was not even included in the film poster. Lando and the Tauntaun were introduced to the media but not Boba Fett. If not for the special offer from Palitoy, Fett would have been just one of a hundred minor characters in the film.

Boba Fett has only become widely popular in the last decade or so and back in 1980 I doubt if he would have been selected as fronting the product line. I can imagine a display piece such as yours advertising the Bounty Hunter promotion with a tray to hold the booklets that were produced. A similar item was pictured in the ROTJ Palitoy competition but I have never seen one in the flesh (pic below).

Craig.
