Hi guys
I'm just wondering if any of you lot have ever visited the old Star Wars sets in Tunisia?
If so I'm just wondering what the logistics are like, and is it something you can do on your own or with a specialist tour company.
It's something I would like to do and possible go next year.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Luke

I'm not sure you'd want to go there these days unfortunately.

I wenr there in 2013, the tour operator ran a two day excursion which was awesome!

We went to a roman amphitheatre and then headed south to matmata and stopped off at hotel Sidi Dris (Lars Homestead interior) aftet that, we headed Douz which we had a camel ride into the Sahara, after we were put up in a 4* hotel overnight stay.

Next morning up early and crossed the salt flats of Chott - El- Jerid, we did not see or goto the Lars Homestead dome, but crossing was stunning! Our next stop was Touzer, after a tour into an oasis on house and cart, we got in Toyota Landcruisers and across the dunes to thw set of Mos Espa which is awesome, it is all there even moisture vaperatotors, after that it was one more stop ant back to the hotel!

Really loved it and fully recommended, however its alot of time on the road in a coach!

I will post some pics

I did a similar trip, really enjoyable especially when you are out in the sahara then you go up over a dune to look down onto the set but I won't be rushing back to Tunisia any time soon, nice people bad food...

I went back in 96 so there were no specific tour guides but we did stop off at the homestead which was made the hairs on my neck stand up!
It's a lot of time on a bus but there's some fantastic sights to see. The amphitheatre rivals the colloseum for wow factor

I'm now afflicted with severe mobility problems. My largest regrets are that, pre-illness, I never saw the Pyramids, Pompeii and the Tunisian Star Wars locations.

Go! :D

I went in 1994 while at university on a field trip. It wasn't touristy at all, we just made our own way over there and had a look around.

Thanks for all the response.
Those photos look great!

Maybe next year isn't the best time to go, but with the way things are who knows when it will be a good time to go to Tunisia.

I suspect that the safe time to go will be a very long time in comming, the way that part of the world is now.

Yep did the trip and 700 mile excursion in 2010 and it was just superb 8) The excursion cost around £80 per person which included visiting SW, Phantom Menace, Gladiator(El Gem coliseum) and The English Patient film locations :!: That included lunch at the Lars homestead, a ride across the desert in Land Rover type vehicles and over night stay at a hotel plus lots more ie sunrise at the salt lakes
A real Mecca type trip for me-my greatest to date :D

I did it in 2002. Just hired a car and drove around with an old style analogue map. (No sat nav back then!)
Was the closest thing to a religious experience I ever had!

It's so sad that Tunisia along with other countries are no longer considered safe due to a few extremists. Must be terribly hard on the economy to lose all that tourism. Not to mention those directly impacted by terrorism.

If you ever get the opportunity to go, I'd recommend freestyling it so you can spend as long as you like at the coolest places - Lars Homestead interior and exterior, Star Wars canyon etc - and skip the bits you don't fancy - eg all of Episode I :p
It was fun being able to explore around and try to spot old set pieces being used as sheds, chicken coops etc
