Fisher & Paykel AT-AT......!!

I don't know if this is the right place for this thread but I didn't know where else to put it. A while back a little discussion came up in the favourite vehicles and playsets thread about the scale of vintage ships and I think it was PGowdy saying he never liked the fact that a lot of them were way off in their scaling to the vintage figures, i.e too small. Then I think someone else put a photo of a vintage Falcon with shrunk figures to the size they would be to be in scale with it and a few comments were made and I was saying how I'd like to see an AT-AT in correct scale with a vintage figure, it would prob be about 5 feet tall! Well, I was mulling this over for a couple of weeks and in the end I thought **** it, I'm just going to try and make one out of cardboard:

The hardest part has been working out the size and shape of everything. I've properly done my head in the other day measuring every part of the main body and scaling it up to the size it needs to be. It's not going to be 100% correct in size but it should be close. I basically worked out that an AT-AT is 22.5 metres tall and an average man is 1.8 metres tall. 1.8x12.5=22.5. Vintage Luke is 9.6cm tall, 9.6x12.5=120cm. From this basic calculation and scematics of an AT-AT online I worked all the other dimensions out. I've started making the body and have got the three sections glued together. It will need some tweaking and the centre section needs another layer/reshaping so it's flush with the front and back sections and looks more accurate. It needs to be strengthened and shaped around the bottom and all that. Got to make legs, head and neck. I'm way in over my head and you probably think I'm mental but I'm quite enjoying it. The photo with it sitting on my tripod shows the actual height it will be when finished, 120cm :!:




I don't know where this project is going and whether I'm just going to make it as the basic shape, photograph it and then dismantle it or whether I'm going to add detail and paint it etc. Not sure, I'll see how it goes. It's going to take a long time but I'll post progress when I've done a bit more :|

Yup, the scale frustration was a pain, I never really understood it as a kid though.

My Falcon seemed fine but I never understood why the Snowspeeder couldn't fly through the legs of an AT AT.

Looking back the Die Cast speeder was closer to the scale of the AT AT than the full size one.

The new AT ATs are huge, but still miles off. This thing looks gigantic

I did a bit more on the AT-AT; built up the centre section and clad it with another layer of cardboard so it's flush with the front and back sections. Added card at the bottom to make it flat and the right shape. Strengthened the inside with two struts and cut a hole in the front one for a neck tube. I'm going to make the head and attach it to a long 13cm diameter cardboard tube neck that will slide in and be removable. The gaps between the cardboard on the body need filling and finishing at some point. I've started doing a few calculations for the top of the leg bits and the legs themselves, will start making them next. There's already been a few **** ups I've had to correct! It's proving quite tricky but it's all good fun

Heh heh! Would be like the Epcot centre! I'll see how this turns out first, could be a Falcon or Imp Shuttle on the horizon
