Question for Ikea Detolf cabinet owners

Went to Ikea today with the intention of buying a "DETOLF", as everyone talks about them for figure displaying.

When I got there I ended up buying a "BRIMNES" instead (big mistake).

I've just built it and never seen so much junk in my life, as it literally falls over front ways under its own weight. Simply letting go of it causes it to fall forward and topple over. They advise in the instructions anchoring it to a wall (Not in the store i should say, only in the instructions). What they dont say is it cannot even stand up without toppling over.

Ikea is a momentous round journey for me, so before i waste any more time...

My question to the DETOLF owners is, does this have the same problem?, or does it stand square and firm under its own weight?

My parents have Detolfs - they stand naturally.
So all should be well.

Good luck.

I've had problems with cabinets leaning forwards when you put them next to the wall. It's because the rear feet sit on top of the carpet gripper and the front ones don't. I put something under the front legs on mine to straighten it up. Also use a bracket to attach them to the wall, makes it sturdy and safe if you have little ones. Don't know about Detolf, don't have any.

Either swap for a detolf that do stand up under their own weight (and when laden with SW goodness) or get some wedges under the front feet of your case to rock it back ever so slightly and prevent it falling forwards.

A lot of ikea furniture comes with those little straps for fastening to a wall but they are a safety addition rather than a necessity (in case something falls on a kid they are covered). I bought a book case recently and just used the wedges and it's fine.

I recently purchased a Detolf for my collection and it is not anchored to the wall and seems really stable and safe (on carpet). You can see:

I have both the Detolf and another unit from Ikea, sure it was the Brimnes as well. The Detolfs stand up no problem, even on carpet but the other does tend to lean forward with weight in it but that could be because its made to sit more flush against the wall and the raised edge of the carpet gives it that bit of a hand. I just put something under the front to make it more level, never worried about anchoring it to the wall and it has never toppled over yet

Anchor it to the wall, that's assuming you are fixing it to a brick or block wall. Not plasterboard. Job done

Thanks for all the replies. I'm trying to avoid having a cabinet that needs fixing to the wall, so given your responses I've ordered the DETOLF online.

£35 extra for delivery though, but I suppose it saves the nightmare of having to go back to that place :p

I never secured my Detolf and it stands just fine. The only problem I have with them is that they soon become too small

Nearest one to me is a fair distance so unless my folks are going for something I usually just pay the delivery charge, it's defintely not cheap but their cabinets/cases are pretty fairly priced and like you said it saves you the hassle of the journey and dealing with shop staff/walking around a shop the size of a football stadium!

Detolfs are great. I had 7 at one point. Absolute bargain for £40.
I bought all of mine second hand (ready assembled) locally for between £11 (for a pair!) and £22.
You can't go wrong with a Detolf.

I have 2 detolfs.... solid as anything.

However, my only grumble is the magnet closure is so dam strong it makes the case wobble a fraction when opening... just enough make figures fall over !! Grrrr

detolf are good but in my upstairs room it suffered from walk past vibration, the floor at fault but to get round the problem I cut up small lengths of clear aquarium plastic piping , slit down the middle and put on the edges of the glass shelves to stop vibrating noise glass on glass. Also slit lengths to put on the front edge of the shelves so the items don't creep forward to much. But very good valve for money to display the smaller items
