It certainly looks radio controlled with the battery contact points but the back looks a bit different to the vintage radio controlled R2D2, it doesn't seem to have the on/off switch and it opens all the way up. Does it have the Kenner 1978 date stamp on it? Here's a pic of a vintage one to compare ...

Ebay seems to be full of listings for rare variants or factory or paint app errors, different coloured hands or arms etc, when really they are just knackered.

Phew, that's a relief, I was worried I had payed too much when I bought that other one listed on Ebay for a grand, but seeing the price of this I think I got a bit of a bargain :)

There was also an Empire game, which was actually a conversion kit for the original Star Wars stand up game and cockpit, replacing the game chip and game surrounds rather than bringing out a completely new version. Released in 1985, the year after the Jedi game.

There are some of these on ebay at the moment, the Empire catalogue with Luke and Yoda on the cover, just search for "vintage star wars catalogue". They are also quite common on US ebay, although the shipping costs bump the price up a bit, search for " vintage star wars catalog" the American spellin...
