i'm a bit of an old school gamer (and a bit behind with gaming nowadays) but i wouldnt mind treating myself to a secondhand ps3, mainly for the blu ray player but also to play a few games now and again.

im after a chunky one but have heard so much about them failing and problems with fans and ylod? looking on ebay there are loads for sale not working.

they are going pretty cheap in cex but want some advice on which one to buy?

have many of you on here had ones go wrong?

I bought the ps3 slim from Amazon about 2 years ago. It's been used heavily virtually every day and we've never had an issue with it.

saying that I'll get in tonight and it's probably ylod now.

My PS3 fat 60Gb died early last year with the dreaded YLOD (yellow light of death). It basically just stopped working and wouldn't even eject the game I left in it  I replaced it with a recon 160Gb from a company on Ebay. Cost about £100 exchange with a few months guarantee. I would advise you buy from one of these places. Failing that, someone on here might be selling one

Go slim (as new as possible), the fat ones are notorious for YLOD so it would be just like having a ticking time bomb :)

Mumbo is spot on IMO...

You can pick up a BNIB slim PS3 for uder £150 these days, then get all the used games and controllers etc you need cheap.
The longer the PS4 is out, the cheaper the PS3 will become.

Good luck :D

BTW, if you want old skool gaming, a Wii with homebrew channel would be my preference.

Don't make any decisions yet...

This might be the droid you're looking for...

A vast line-up of software titles: PS TV offers a huge library of PS Vita*, PSP and classic PS One titles. You'll be able to enjoy all of these titles using a DUALSHOCK 3 or DUALSHOCK 4 controller.

No mention of PS2 games yet but you did say you were old skool

This also allows you to play PS3 and PS4 games in a different room to where your main console is based.

I can only add that i bought my PS3 way back in 2007, the first released version from 60gig, i still have and use it regulary.
I can honestly say mine has seen 1000's off game hours, had like 500-600 hours game play for every Call of Duty game, playen many other games on it and still runs OK. (Only inserting a disc needs an extra manual push against the disc because he can't retract it in anymore).
So you never know, seems some die from YLOD quickly, some are build to last forever...
Anyway if mine ever dies, i'll probably switch to PS4.

Mine is an original tank too, still going strong 8)

Continuing the old ps3 brick theme, my PS3 is the original from day 1 release and it's still going strong :)

Mine was a nice shiny fat PS. Then it died all of a sudden  Slim just isn't the same but it has tons more memory

I had a chunky one. Died.
Have slim one now (which you can pick up quite cheap these days) and it seems to be running just fine after over a year of fairly constant use.
