Not sure where to ask or post this.

Currently I am attempting to model Dooku's lightsaber in 3D. (see attachment)

And I happened upon something curious about the design. Its about the small metal spike sticking out from where the plasma blade should be.

On the actual blueprint of the metal spike it's getting in the way of the plasmablade, so I have to adjust it so it wont get scorched by the plasmablade.

Is this an oversight from the designers part, and has it always been like this?

It's not a big deal, but I take pride in accuracy, but also in functionality.

What I am trying to ask is, should I make it so the plasma blade wont cut into the design of the hilt, or should I stick to the blueprint design, despite the hilt design is in the way of the plasmablade?

Are you referring to the blade guard as the "spike" designed to protect the wielder of the blade from the blade itself, so part of the intrinsic design I would say.

Yes, the bladeguard. Particulary the part I circled in red.

If I follow the blueprint, the bladeguard 'clips' into the plasmablade. If I edit the plasmablade to be thin enough to not clip into the bladeguard, it will be thinner than any plasmablade has ever been.

Just wondering if this design is the canon design and if it's supposed to clip into the plasmablade? Because it will clip into the plasmablade if I follow the blueprint to the letter.

Would it be possible the guard has a fork design? And maybe goes up each side of the blade?
Have you any drawings of looking down on it? Or from the front?
I understand that you want it made to detail, you would think whoever designed it would have noticed what you have pointed out.

The best material I was able to find for that angle you describe was this. [attachment]

I have been looking up youtube for people who made their own physical replicas, and it would seem that some of them modified the crossguard to be slightly smaller in order to fit a tube representing the plasmablade.

Judging from the blueprint I am using, it has to be a designflaw of the hilt. If we look at the attached picture of the official replica, the end of the crossguard seems to be slightly elevated and seems to be in the way of where the plasmablade should be once its activated.

Yes I can see it now, your right that is a bad design in his saber alright. I wonder did it ever give Dooku any problems! Although it seemed to work fine anytime someone pissed him off :D

Never realised how much it looks like a petrol pump nozzle until now.

Do you think I should stick to the original design, or make a slight tweak so it wont grill its own guard? ;)

Funny enough, they tweaked his design on saber toys so the blade wouldn't be blocked. And in some series they removed the guard entirely.

Yes I know I would also be into detail. You could make it exactly the same then you know you have an exact replica of the saber he used.
Are they expensive to make? If you the wer not happy you could tweak it and try again. If you get it finished put a picture up on the props thread.

Well, it's expensive if you plan to 3D print the parts for later usage.

I am more of a 3D graphics artist. I model objects and render them on screen to look realistic. Then I proceed to make some last changes through either photoshop or after effects. That procedure only cost time.

Should I still post the final result in the props thread even if I only made the entire thing in digital space? :)

I had no idea what cost was involved it sounds expensive. Sure you could put it up here now you have the thread started. I would love to see how it turns out for you.
