How to grade? AFA or UK Graders

Still being a newbie on here I need to find out more about getting a card graded as I haven't done it before.

I have managed to pick up an ungraded R2D2 12 back from an original owner and want to get it graded - I see most are done by AFA but I assume that means sending it to america? Sounds expensive and long winded

I also see there is a UK Graders website so you can do it here in the UK but most of the figures I see all seem to be AFA graded so what's the score - which way do I go?

AFA graded items are worth more in the long run as they are the international,standard. But as you say it is expensive and risky posting to America. I've heard the UKG service is excellent but I've never used them. Steve from ukgraders is a member here if you have any questions.

Personally I'd go with UKG for 2 reasons. One they are UK based, and secondly they may end up being the authority themselves in the grading world if AFA keep misgrading items etc

Completely agree with the above . UKG all the way for me now.

BTW you may wanna search AFAvs UKG because there has been several past threadss on the subject in the past :wink:

I would certainly recommend UKG,

steve is a really top guy, the service is excellent but not just when your getting stuff graded, if i have ever needed advice he's always given it ( much like all the forum users ) he's made custom cases for baggies, packaging is top notch. Frankly i poo my pants when i send him my babies and they are going a couple of hundred miles, no way will i ever entertain posting to the states. Check out their website.

Got a picture? If it isn't going to grade 80+ it generally is not worth doing. Just get a case.

james is right, if you ever wanted to sell it on a low grade would devalue it most likely.

if your just wanting to protect it get a case, if its a real fine example get it preserved

and my vote is always UKG unless its a rarity you are wanting to flip.

Another vote for UKG, quick service, look equally as good cased up and Steve is a gentleman to deal with.....

Thanks for all your advice - the deal fell through on the one I wanted to grade so it doesn't matter for now but I know what to do for when I do land a decent one that needs grading
