I'm looking at stuff from the US and the seller has the 'import charges' on his listing,
I messaged him to ask if he could drop the import charge and let me deal with the duty this end (UK)
His reply was 'Anything shipped internationally is shipped to the ebay shipping center. I am not sure how they handle import charges. Thanks'
Is this true? is it beyond his control?
I wouldn't be so bothered but the 'import charge' quoted is around 40% of the value.
Cheers,
Jez.

Jez, I stand corrected but US sellers were given the option to signed up to the scheme, many of which now regret it as international sells have fallen.

Your best bet it to reach out to a forum member in the US for help. They can buy and re-post the item to you.

There have been a few post on this both on here and RS. Unfortunately it is true and unless the seller is willing to opt out of eBay's scheme then you will pay them import charges.

Basically how it works is that the seller ships the item to an eBay sorting office and then they send on the item to you. Apparently it is designed to encourage more US sellers to ship internationally, unfortunately it has had a negative effect with a lot of buyers over here who had in the past asked sellers to mark down the value on the customs forms to avoid paying duty.

Apparently eBay collect the duty - and I haven't heard of anyone who has purchased through this method and been charged additional duty once the package has arrived - however it is still a rip off.

Frank is right, just get them to send you a new invoice. I've asked for this to be done and sellers have obliged.

There are some strange people on ebay lately. One Seller when I asked her about marking the Customs form as $20 or less if I bought the item stated in her reply 'I don't understand what you mean by a customs form, I've never completed one of these before God bless'

God bless!!!!!!?????

Explained in my reply about Customs charges etc and got nowhere except another God bless at the end!!

Given up now

I just bought an item from America using this method, I wasn't keen as it was an extra £30 on top of the £20 postage, if it arrives faster and unmolested then so be it. I used to always get away with lmport charges, but lately I've been stung everytime.

Another idiotic move by ebay. They really have no clue whatsoever.
'we're gonna encourage international sales by charging buyers massive import duties' - international sales plummet.
'we're gonna encourage uk sellers to offer free shipping by charging them 20% of their shipping costs' - shipping charges rise across the board.
What next? Try a curb teenage pregnancies by cutting the tips off of condoms??
****ing morons.

ha ha - Pete not a fan then?

To be honest you and I both do the same sort of thing and both these moves by eBay are counterproductive for us - the Global shipping is a pain in the arse because it take away our chances of getting something through customs - and in some cases even charges up fees that we wouldn't have had to pay

The charge on postage costs is just downright scandalous - I can not believe that they have been allowed to get away with it

I almost never buy from the US anymore because of this. It was hard enough already finding someone who can be bothered to ship to the UK AND mark down the package value. Now... it's just not worth the ****ing ball-ache.

Well said i totally agree

A scheme to help USA Sellers attract more International buyers

Who the **** came up with that sales pitch, Barry Obama Himself

Its a total ripp off and ive told sellers who are involved in it to get out as it will be harming their sales. Ive bought stuff from people who are in the scheme and asked them to change the invoice but they say they carnt. It seems to be locked in. Lucky i have a USA Address they can send the items too instead.   :D

Its just another Ebay and Government Scam to get More Tax Money out of you because they hate seeing us getting stuff and not paying tax on it. Its like all other systems put in place to rob the people. The people will always find a way TO GET around it and not pay the ripp off Tax Charges!!

For me its just another Example of ebay ripping people off. The sooner someone comes up with another competitive auction site the better.

It can't be that hard to do ??? :? :? :?

I left it, there's no way I'm paying an 'estimated' £120 import duties on 300 quids worth of kit shame really.

This Global Shipping Program has really put me off buying stuff from US. Unless the seller is willing to scrap it I rather not buy the item. Really sad, as I have has lots of great deals with US sellers!!
