Plastic guns - painting tips please!

For those of you that have painted toy guns up to better resemble props what method did you use? What paints?
Acylics as with miniature painting?

I found it pretty easy to use cans. You just need to build the coats up to how you want and if you want to weather something, use the dry brushing technique.

I've used cans but cleaned down the piece then spray primed it first ..get a better job if you prime it before you black spray, then used brush and acrylics to weather/rust
