RE GRADING AFA /UKG?

Just a daft question but is it possible to regrade your graded piece up? Like say afa70 to maybe possibly a ukg75 ,I know I've seen some stingy grading by afa and I was once told they keep grades low on high end pieces they actually own themselves hence keeping the values high on some of there collections ( no idea if true ,I was just told this once !!) ? Just a thought ,anyone ?

I think that the idea that they grade friendly pieces is probably a bit of a myth - they wouldn't have a business if there was evidence of this - I know that there are rumours that regular graders do get preferential grades but again I think they are probably unfounded

In terms of re-grading - both companies are happy to do it (for a fee!) but your chances of getting an improvement in grade are probably low as it is likely that with age the item has got worse - especially if it has been moved around a few times

Also, I believe that the general consensus is the opposite to what you have written and that UKG are harsher with their grades than AFA - so if that is the case then sending an AFA piece to UKG might see a downgrade

Anyway, hopefully this is seen as factually correct and not in anyway anti-grading as I would hate to be accused of being biased

Agree with this, I sent a MOC to AFA that had been graded by UKG and AFA gave it same grade but 85 for bubble instead of 80 which UKG gave it.

I'd say what Iain has posted is spot on. In my personal experience UKG grades were quite strict so you could find it grades differently...i.e. Lower. However, it was also my experience that Steve was very upfront with regards to why a certain grade was attributed to a figure, something I found fair enough.

I would be very surprised to something upgraded, be it a moc or loose figure...

Just my two cents :D

Verry interesting Ian's spot on about about ukg ,in my personel opinion they are more on the ball ,but collectors value the AFA grade ? I've had 85 grade afa carded items and thought WTF realy ? Also there's a lot more scrutiny over grading in light of toy Toni fiasco ,I suppose that mistake is not gonna happen again !!!

Not that many people admit to resubmitting figures but it does happen and yes sometimes they do come back with different overall grades and subs.

Take grading with a pinch of salt, it's only someones opinion after all.

Not to sound negative but UKG used to be quite soft on grading. Iv owned one or two pieces in the past that came to me as trade bait that were UKGed. One of those pieces I then traded to another who then sent it to AFA for regrading so the case matched and AFA downgraded the piece from an 80 to 75 or 70. It was a 12 back Chewie. Iv Also seen it with a loose Vinyl caped Jawa too where a UKGed 85 turned out to be an AFA 80. Maybe times have changed since then.

Iv submitted plenty over the years to AFA and I regard Tom a good friend within the hobby and Iv never had preferential grades. Items are what they are, this conclusion of preferential grading sounds like potential sour grapes from someone who may have expected higher grades than they got just my 2 pence worth.

Having said this I recently submitted four different First Shots for authentication and casing for their protection to AFA. I wasn't too concerned about the grading aspect of it. I thought 2 of them would get 85's and 2 would be 80's but I only got one 85 and three 80's. As its been pointed out it it boils down to opinions. I'm not grumbling at all as I said grading is the least of my worrys. Authentication and preservation is what it's about for me. G

Ps sorry for the long winded response. Again just another opinion. 8)

Down the years I've been disapointed with some grades and the conclusion I have come to is that the high end stuff like 12 backs seem to get graded harsher than the more common items. Again just my thoughts and opinion on stuff I've had graded. But I'm the same the grade doesn't really bother me. More the protection and display value.

AFA are certainly more lenient on trilogos, I've seen some AFA 80s with horrific bubble dents that wouldn't have got more than 50 on a Kenner card. It's all just nonsense really, the only way it could ever be 100% consistent is if it was graded by a robot or machine and graded it mathematically (eg 10% of the card is missing - AFA 90!)

if you have too much money and time anything will be possible

took one with ink touch and send it from grader to other grader and you've got same result " a ink touch "

maybe it's possible to get a higher valuation, from a earlier graded item who knows .....
