We had a family birthday recently and 4 of the birthday cards plus a wedding invitation i had to go and collect from the post office and i had to pay £1.11 on each one of them!

They were standard greeting cards, nothing bulky and all of them had 1st class stamps on them.

since when was a first class stamp not enough to post a greeting card????

if this carries on people are gonna hit the roof when it gets to christmas, people queing just to collect there cards.

so whats the point in a first class stamp now then??? taking the piss!!!

On a slightly different note, my local post office man told me that they don't separate out 2nd class any more and it gets there just as fast as 1st. Too much cost involved keeping it held back to go slower.

A shambles

Did the birthday cards have badges on them?

no but one was double layered and covered in glitter

I don't understand why you had to pick them all up, unless they were to thick. I bet everyone who has been sent the same wedding invites has had to pay as well.

I had this tool hire company phone up asking if I wanted them to send me a catalogue, so I said no but they insisted. Two weeks later I get a card from post office telling me I had a letter to pick up. Drive past the tool hire shop on the way to the post office only to find it's the tool hire catalogue which I ended up paying £2.25 to find out.

This is in fact wrong. 2nd class mail that we collect on our afternoon collections gets left behind until early hours of the morning when it ten gets collected and taken to the mail centre. 1st class gets collected earlier in the afternoon. Royal Mail gets fined for treating second class as 1st as they are priced different so have to have a different service.

Post office staff no nothing about the Royal Mail system, they think they do but they don't. They are 2 different companies under the same parent company.

As to the OP point, pricing in proportion has been in for the last 8 years, size and weight are both taken into account when posting an item.

Then how come this has only just started happening and with 4 different sized cards?

Working for Royal Mail I have noticed over the last year to 2 years more of these charges are getting caught, a lot used to get through without being charged. Even if it is 1mm over the size for the amount of stamps on the letter/parcel they get charged. We always see an increase in charges when stamp prices go up in April.

The worst is at Christmas, so many cards come through with charges on them it unreal.

What annoys me is the £1 handling charge. Why not make it 50p then the blow wont be as bad.

Sounds like someone was on a mission that day - hence they got picked out and the fees added

In terms of the postage, it is down to the weight - so some of the bigger cards do weight more than the allowance for a first class stamp. Some of the blame has to go to the sender - this has been in place for donkeys years now and if they were in doubt then they should have just asked at the counter

It is all well and good blaming RM but if they have a set of rules for posting and you don't adhere to them then really it is your fault - I guess the annoyance comes when they don't regularly enforce those rules and then go on a bit of a drive

i always thought a letter or greetings card with a 1st class stamp on it was a done deal?

pretty sure ive had big cards come through in the past no problem.

i can remember a parcel arriving for me years ago and it had about 20 stamps attached to it

The best ive seen is a parcel that came from the Philippines, it was covered in stamps front back and side's, you couldnt see any of the box and it was a large box as well, about the size on the Imperial Shuttle box.

It would be simple if that was still the case with regard to put a stamp on and away it goes. Unfortunately, so many cards are just slightly over they get caught.

I stand corrected - any difference at Christmas? That's when he told me

No it should be all year round although at Christmas stuff does turn up next day when its been posted 2nd class. Not sure if the mail centres just get stuff through because of volume but they shouldn't according to our regulator.

Just read my post back Andrew and I sounded a bit angry. Not intended at all. :D :D

I was a bit scared

I'll shout at my post office man on your behalf
