UKG Grading - Does it add value?? Your opinions please.

Hey Bram, I can try to answer a few of your questions and Im sure others will join in with their opinions.

I dont feel I have have enough experience of their grading in comparison to AFA to say whether they are more leniant/ harsh so perhaps someone can chime in here. I rarely buy graded items.

UKG do provide a quality service and Steve is a great guy to deal with. Their service seems good value for money as you save money from not sending it overseas. The cases I have seen are every bit as good as AFA's in my experience in terms of looks and build quality.

I would probably say that sending items to UKG does not make them "worth more" in the eyes of others in the same way that some AFA'd items seem to appeal to buyers. (A phenomenon I still dont fully understand.) I would say that UKG items do hold value however.
One example of this is the POTF Yak Face MOC I bought off Gary a while back. I sent it in to UKG where it got an 80. Later in time I sold it and got only a little more than I paid for it I think. If it had gone to AFA and received an 80 it would have undoubtedly sold for more. I had no issue with this as I didnt want to ship it overseas for grading. As we all know, the bubbles on those POTF figures are notoriously bad so the thought of it getting there or coming back trashed was a bit daunting for me at the time.

On a side note, I have used Steve at UKG to do the cases for my three packs any custom work and he has always done a great job.

Hope this is of some help mate.

Chris.

I can only give you my experience.

Steve is great. The communication is fantastic and I have no doubt he will give you his best.

It's great to use if you want to guarantee an item. Such as a Baggie for example. He did a great job on my Luke PBP/palitoy hybrid.

He listens to your needs and is making me a Frank custom case for my Baggie.

So far my experience has been fantastic

I personally would only use UKG as I have found Steve a pleasure to deal with in every possible aspect from design all the way to finished product, build quality is (IMO) superior to AFA stuff I have seen, but as for increasing value - AFA all the way, as Chris commented above & I concur "(A phenomenon I still dont fully understand.)" & am never likely to  I think its just the badge syndrom - got to have nike ove adidas :?

My 2 pairs of trainers are Dunlop and Hi-Tech. What does that tell you?

If you had said they were fred perry's & pony's I would have said you were a wise man, dunlop & Hi-tech does somehow scream that your mum is still buying your footwear.

But in seriousness, the modern generation all seem far to hooked on the "in thing" & are willing to pay a kings ransom just to state the obvious, it beats me

I have never sent anything in for grading so am probably not the best man to answer the question

However, I think it would be a great idea for people in the UK to get behind UKG in order to raise it's profile enough that it does add value. I can't see any real reason, if you want graded figures, why UKG should add any less value than AFA.

Oh, and I the first pair of trainers I was allowed to buy myself were British Knights - how cool is that

Bram, there must be something in the water.
I have just received 3 MOCs back from UKG and was contemplating starting a thread "UKG my first experience".

The only reason i haven't done it tonight is i'm after a bit of info from Steve at UKG.

I'll keep you posted

I've used UKG for 3 MOC's and was pleased with the grading of 80% for all 3, I was a little surprised to be honest I expected a 75 for at least one of them based on my AFA experience of grading (which can be very harsh in my view). Harsh is fine though really, as long as its consistent across all the grading.

Maybe the leniency works against UKG graded items in terms of value, people might buy an 80% and be expecting an AFA 80% and left disappointed, its about consistency though. I don't see why UKG should feel they have to fall in line with AFA grading policy and I guess they have decided not to. I have an AFA ROTJ Palitoy Klaatu, which I picked up for £14, its only a 60% and I was amazed when I got it, it has a crease running through the middle but doesn't break the card and you have to shimmy it in the light to see it, that and a light scuff on the back deemed it a 60%. It displays every bit as well as the 80% ones but the seller couldn't give it away at that grade, it would have at least as much ungraded.

I find I can pick up many ROTJ cards for less than £40 in a condition that is hitting 80% ie nothing but light edgewear or a small crease or negligable bubble ding. I get them graded as I know, watching 100's of auctions that you can sell them without too much hassle for £60 upwards if its 80%. So in that sense I make the price of grading back should I sell. I think if you bung it on ebay at 99p starting bid you guarantee a sale but you could end up with any price from £35 to £70 for your average UKG ROTJ MOC (say an ewok or Leia poncho). You can get a better price if you set a buy it now best offer at about £75 then eventually someone will come in with an offer of £60 for most of them I reckon, you just need a bit of patience. Of course ESB and SW figures on ROTJ cost more but its all relative, its about how you sell them, plenty of pictures and detail that's the key, then you can make grading them worth the effort. At the end of the day an item that's £35 ungraded is only going to rise in price once graded so much, as anyone can just buy ungraded and send it off themselves. For higher end items, I guess people want to guarantee what they are buying so prefer to pay a premium for graded stuff.

Steve is great to deal with as everyone says, it's not about financial gain for me and you get the sense he's not just in it for the cash either which is good. Before UKG I had no option to grade my items, I was crying out for a UK equivalent to AFA. Now we have one it deserves the full support of UK buyers in my view. If American's turn their nose up at UKG that's their choice, they have AFA after all, but it's a great service for UK buyers to grade their items and entomb them in lovely acrylic!

I used the UKG service about ten times and the only thing that stopped me was the turnaround time because i was getting things back quicker from AFA for just a little bit more money and always lost money selling my UKG items, however if you know you are never going to sell and dont mind the wait, then UKG is good. Always graded my items to my expectation and the cases are lighter and nicer than AFA although I noticed a few came to me with slight scratches on them already.
