My vintage Star Wars figures

Hello All,

I've been going through my old Star Wars figures with my son (figures have been up in my Mum's loft for nearly 30 years). I've been doing a bit of digging around on the forum so I was more than interested to see that I have a Jawa with vinyl cape (had no idea)!

My question to you all is, is it worth the effort to get figure graded before potentially putting up for sale..? What's minimum approx cost before it's not worth sending away for grading..?

I have about 80 figures in total and think some of the others may be rare (Leia in Boushh disguise etc)

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me.

Cheers

Hi, welcome to the forum. Grading is all about condition. It is only worth sending something in for grading if the condition is perfect, so you are fairly confident it will score at least an 80. Anything lower than an 80 (and arguably including an 80) and the grade will actually detract from the value. Post a few photos of your Jawa and we'll tell you if it's worth grading.

There is a case for grading lower condition items to confirm authenticty, but 1) most items are not rare enough to justify it, and 2) every grading company have proven they are to some extent incompetent by grading fakes, so many people like myself do not care much for their opinion on authenticity.

The good news is it looks real, however with those rips in the cape it is definitely not worth grading. I'm not up on current VCJ prices (make a post in the valuation section if you want some advice) but in that condition it's probably worth in the region of 50-70% of the value of a perfect one.

Also worth mentioning that the VCJ came with a specific variant of the weapon, so if you can't find yours don't just buy the first Jawa blaster you see on eBay as it probably won't be the correct one.

As Edd points out, grading would almost certainly devalue the Jawa, simply because of the cape rips.

If you find the blaster put up a pic of that as well with close ups and also get pics of your other figures up with the weapons you have, in the valuation thread, members on here will gladly give you ball park values for them. If you do sell the items it is nice if you also give members on here the chance to buy once you have valuation advice, always remembering that the eBay route will attract fees and there are unscrupulous buyers out there that will try it on.

Pics on here will be your best starting point and also reference for you you use fore example The Imperial Gunnery website that has a lot of info on how to check weapons etc

Look forward to seeing pics

Good luck

As Edd said early grading for value is all about condition as many collectors search for perfection and will pay significantly more for higher grades so 80 or for some 85 will be the minimum grade. Some other inexperienced collectors/sellers may choose to grade in case they have any rare variations that they are unaware of that hopefully the grader would pick up on. Another option would be to ask for a valuation on this site, just make sure you take lots of pictures as some variations maybe quite small and relatively insignificant like Red Bar R5D4 or Orange Hair Luke Farmboy also Vinyl Caped Jawa which you already have.
