Over the last year many of the folks i showed my figures or ships too have either laughed out loud or were stunned and regressed to 8 year old kids.

in the second category were many many guys who were loving the idea of even having a beater on the shelf or a ship diplayed somewhere in their homes,, as a memory or just a cool peice of retro.

And i often walked past some of the kookier shops in Dublin that sell everything from irish dancing dresses to clothing made only from hemp, and thought how the hell do they survive?
I know that forbidden planet etc. specialize in the genre but stock only modern and novelty items and no vintage lines of any toys.
There is a market out there and with the right stock and enthusiastic staff and slick displays it could work.

I have a long history of skateboarding and many of the skateboard shops serve as meeting hang out places and places to buy stuff and also do mail order etc and survive nicely.

I have a job and i probably will never do this but i have many mates in skate companies and distribution who have the retail game figured out and woulds be good guides.
My idea is relatively simple.

As rents are cheap as hell now and shops available everywhere, set up a cult retro shop that acts as a focal point for folks interested in the toys and associated memoribilia, with a nice display like tiger hams back lit boxes.
Buying in person and on a good website, with staff employed to serve, chat ,enthuse, and surf all day doing deals on toys from everywhere on the net and in jumble sales and car boots . (what a job)

obviously i would have to do multiple toy lines to ensure wide coverage and interest. but everything from holy grail items to stacks of loose in nice temporary cases like the plastic mini starcases.

and things priced from a cheap beater to more substantial items like graded MOC.

There is one thing that doesnt quite sit with me right though. Assuming that most of your punters are Joe public items that collectors might want could dissapear into civilian hands again?? or those civilians might start collecting.
It would be ok for the millions of loose out there but not so for boxed /moc/misb etc.

Yeah i know most folks will say "yeah that exists already,, its called ebay" well ebay is fine but its not personal and it appeals to people who know what they are looking for,, i personally started back when i passed a video shop and saw they had star wars inside and when i saw they had a case of vintage i nearly passed out the feeling was sooo powerful.
i was broke but i bought an At-At commander for 12 euro. and over the next few days i kept going back to buy more as i had the feeling that that was it ,, no restock,, when it was gone it was gone?

i love this idea and if i had the money i would do it as a side thing while working,, and i have a few mates who would be perfect staff,, born in the late 70's good designer/photographers and film/retro buffs.
and i would probably hire weasel as consultant SW nerd and security as there is nothig as scary as a belfast accent.

If you can make it work go for it. There is a very good reason many of the local comic shops or the retro toy shops closed down in the last 10 years-its VERY niche, even if you get people stop by and pick up a piece or two while they are around they won't be repeat customers like people coming in to buy a loaf of bread and some milk every 2 days.

Stocking a shop (if it was purely toys) would be a large overhead cost to get the shop looking full of gear and enough stuff for sale to pay the rent /bills for the first few months and then there is the advertising and constant promoting - I know a guy who runs a shop and he also runs a lot of charity events and meet up (mini convention type things) in the store to drum up business but that involves websites and money and contacts.

All in all what *might* work is a shop that brings in regular punters (so lets say something like skateboards and clothes or perhaps vinyl and cds) and a little side section of vintage, you can sell the odd piece as you go and if theres enough interest in the toys - try bringing in more and more or moving online and handing out flyers in your shop saying that you have a good amount of stock listed online etc.

It's Food for thought but definitely an all you can eat buffet type meal not a hotdog and a coke

If I ever won the lottery I'd do it in a heartbeat. I would combine it with a little vintage SF&Fantasy book shop also selling other things I like (like old video games) and just sit there reading or playing games all day not caring if I ever sell anything. 8)

I have had a similar thought- but in reality I don't think it could work- finding enough stock at the right price is always a big problem, and eBay is such a massive competitor.
The problem with a bricks and mortar store is having to pass on the overheads (public liabilty insurance, rates, rent, wages etc) then throw in 28 days paid holiday you have to give to full time staff.
I think it would be tough to cover costs, let alone make a profit.

If I was minted I would love to do a shop- not as an investment but for the enjoyment- an English alternative to Brians Toys. If you look what stock they have they are running really low on mocs- and they are one of the biggest buyers of vintage our there!
I think when huge caches of mocs come up they would be must buys- the recent haul would be a nice start for a shop!

It's a fun idea steve 8)

Me and Stu talked about this a while back, it really would be a dream to own a shop, a proper one, not a cheap dive.

But unfortunately you need a lot of stock, and financial backing, something not likely in this economy!

I can see two minor flaws with that idea! 1) As most people on here will tell you, I know FA squared about SW! 2) I'm five foot 9 and built like an Ethiopian famine victim! Bar the accent I'm as intimidating as ****ing Mother Teresa!

Though just for you I'll go learn some Kung Fu!

If you speak to Dave Tree who has a shop called 'All The Cool Stuff' I think it us he will tell you what bloody hard work it is for not a great deal of financial reward.

I think it's a great idea in principal but not too sure how I'd feel when it comes to paying the mortgage at the end of the month. I suppose that's the same for anyone who is self employed though

I remember going to Edinburgh about 5 years ago and coming across a little comic book shop that sold nothing but comics. The shop wasn't great and certainly needed some work doing to the interior to make it look nicer and it was basic. The guy behind the counter just sat there for the entire time when I was in there playing the game Rome (which is a fantastic game)!

I got chatting to him after buying a few comics and it turned out that he made a mint in the dotcom boom of the early 00's and that the shop didn't make a profit but he didn't care as he didn't need to worry about monmey for at least 10-15 years!!!

I remember feeling both amazement and hatred at that bloke! I would love nothing more than to do that for a living!

It would be a great treat to do something like this.

Like Andy said, we spoke about this some time ago with the dream of filling the shop with
all manner of vintage toy lines.

I went into a shop on the Isle Of Wight at Godshill a month ago. It had a shop and then to the side
it had a small museum you had to pay to get into.

I can still dream!

:D ah the sting of common sense,,, i remember that shop in Edinburgh when i lived there.

I think my idea was pretty much all toy lines from the past up to the mid 1990's but particularly starwars,, of course it would have to contain comics ,t-shirts and posters but the focus would be on the toys.
Also skate stuff and vintage state stuff would also go well with it,, as would a small vinyl section.

And i would have a cafe in it up stairs that would have an old TV with channels on it that only had shows on from the 1980's and furniture magazines and a menu that would all be from the 80's.

So sit back on your danger mouse cushions and flick through the channels with the wired remote sipping nescafe gold blend with your feet in reebok pumps listening to NWA and watching "Ferris Bewlers day off" followed by challenge Anneka.
:)

oh and it would be fitted with a mobile phone jammer so nothing would break the illusion

Yes. Owning a business and venturing to something that you really like is really worth it. So, if you like Starwars, then starting business that features Starwars collectibles is a wise and happy decision.

Imperial Nut has it. I think opening a coffee shop that happens to specialise in vintage toys is a way forward. You need a way of getting repeat customers and if you can provide a safe haven for 'nerds' to congregate, drink cola, maybe have some si-fi films on in the back ground would go a long way. Plus you get space for events etc. Come for the coffee and stay for the Vintage :).

I actually wondered about starting up a Lego themed cafe a while back, never going to though, to much startup needed.

Cool idea

I love the thought of having SW retro shop.....

A chain would be great. Geek cafe ...wow

It's all down to money though....but I do think with the right financial backing, and for example some of the guys on this forum behind it with their connections
It could work....if I ever won the lottery  I would be up for it

Thought I would report back, the one I liked the most had the infamous 'I am unsure as to whether its a genuine or replica but it is very nice indeed' crap attached to the description.
