latest film/ dvd you have seen

The Bling Ring - how do I phrase this in a constructive and impartial way... Whatever you do don't bother watching this film. It is devoid of dramatic natarative, you never care about the characters, the plot is pointless and overall you are left wondering why you bothered. That said the acting is good and the soundtrack is original and engertaining as the peice is going for a certain style, but that doesn't make up for its woeful shortfalls.

I watched machette kills online the other day, plenty of nods to star wars, especially with the land speeder

Really?

That's just made me want to watch it more plus the fact it has Amber Heard in it! :D
Pretty boring film after about an hour but theres a virtual exact replica of the land speeder in it near the end and light sabers

I saw Gravity this week in Edinburgh and quite frankly It blew me away. One of the best cinematic experiences of my life.
I went in filled with scepticism as it was in 3D (only). Had there been a non 3D option i would have jumped at it! I've only ever seen one 3D film, The Life of Pi, and it was one of the worst visual experiences of my life. I literally couldn't believe this is what people were spending money going to see. I couldn't believe they were getting away with it. Charging people extra to watch something that looked 5 times worse than regular 2D. WTF?!
And sitting there waiting for Gravity to start the trailer for The Hobbit (2) came on and i wasn't filled with confidence. It looked ****! Didn't even look 3D, it actually looked like really flat 2D images placed at different distances. Like paintings on panes of glass placed small distances apart. Really cheap. And no where near as realistic looking as regular 2D.
But 15 minutes into Gravity and i was transfixed. The 3D actually added to the visual experience and looked clean, crisp, and seamless. Very unlike any 3D i'd seen or heard about to date.
Visually it was stunning and the 3D really gave you a feeling of depth and pulled you right into the environment. And the film itself was completely gripping and nail-bittingly intense.
The whole thing plays out brilliantly from beginning to end with literally only 3 actors ever visible on screen. Only one short massively cheesy, over sentimental scene insultingly crowbarred into the middle of the 3rd act almost ruined it for me and without this one moment, in my opinion, we'd be talking about one of the greatest movies ever made but it really was too much for me to swallow. Bit of a shame but one small blot on an otherwise perfect movie experience.
If you get the chance go see this and see it at the cinema in 3D or people will be telling you for years to come how you missed out and "it's just not the same on DVD/BluRay".

I give Gravity a 4.5/5
Hollywood's burning need for saccharine, over sentimental, bull-**** cost it a perfect 5 (a score i could give to maybe 8 or 9 films ever made).

Saw Gravity last night and agree it is stunning to watch in 3D. As Pete says it pulls you into the environment of the film - however I found this has it's bad points - I felt at times claustrophobic watching it, sounds strange when most of the scenes are out in space but that's how it made be feel. Some parts were so intense it was a relief when a particular scene ended - whether it be a good or bad outcome and there are plenty of those.

Watch it, it's like nothing you would have ever seen before.

Those aren't bad points, they're completely intentional and essential to the experience. If the director didn't manage to make you feel slightly claustrophobic watching someone alone i space trapped in a space suit with their air quickly running out then they would have failed. All that means is the filmmaker succeeded in making you feel like you were really going through the same experience as the characters on screen.

For me personally I didn't like that experience (and wasn't expecting it) and it made me uncomfortable. I have (now don't laugh  ) fainted sitting down in the Cinema about a year ago before and that was watching The Grey. The experience was awful and embarrassing and an ambulance had to be called. I've fainted on numerous occasions usually standing or getting up too quickly, but never at a Cinema and that was due to a scene being too intense and claustrophobic for me. My blood pressure is always low, so I have to be careful at times.

The 2 friends I went with to watch Gravity, one liked me really enjoyed it, the other thought it was boring and wanted more action.

I'm sure Jason Statham will have something out soon enough to please friend 2.

Never seen it before (for which I have already been mocked at work ) - Dirty Harry. Has anyone else ever watched an old film and thought 'why have I never seen this'!? It was one of those experiences. Gripping from start to finish. Lovely and dated 8) . But i'm guessing because everyone else in the world has seen it you guys already knew that :)

Dirty Harry was awesome, all the DH films were good, then again I'm a big Eastwood fan, made some fantastic films, that I have watched again and again over the years.

The only one that comes to mind, is about 10 years ago I watched Its a Wonderful Life, had never seen it, it is now a must watch every Christmas

Another one i've never seen. Must give it a watch.

On a similar note to DH was Serpico. Saw that a few months ago for the first time and thought it was brilliant 8)

I watched Bad Grampa the other night, I usually hate Knocksville but have to say it was 1 of the funniest films I've seen in years. The out-takes we worth the price of admission alone.

Let to the party here but just watched the Lone Ranger on bluray... HOW MUCH FUN WAS THAT....

Seriously the only thing wrong with this film was Disney's piss poor marketing, it is not a kids film and should never have been marketed as such. As a pure rip roaring action packed funfest I can't remember the last time I watched such a well done film.

If you haven't you should watch this film, it will put a smile on your face.

One that's doing the rounds on Freeview at the moment - McVicar with Roger Daltree

Another oldie, but definitely a goldie. Great prison break film. Found myself wanting a bit more violence though :?

Watched Jack Reacher, was ok, but not earth shattering, I'm a bit of a TC fan, but this was quite laboured in parts and dragged a bit.
Worth a watch, but not anything special.

Looking forward to watching the 2 nd install of the Hobbit, bit of fan of LOTR, especially the Hobbit, is in my Top 5 books of all time, so I know they can never live up to the books, but are a must watch for me :D
