I saw Gravity this week in Edinburgh and quite frankly It blew me away. One of the best cinematic experiences of my life.
I went in filled with scepticism as it was in 3D (only). Had there been a non 3D option i would have jumped at it! I've only ever seen one 3D film, The Life of Pi, and it was one of the worst visual experiences of my life. I literally couldn't believe this is what people were spending money going to see. I couldn't believe they were getting away with it. Charging people extra to watch something that looked 5 times worse than regular 2D. WTF?!
And sitting there waiting for Gravity to start the trailer for The Hobbit (2) came on and i wasn't filled with confidence. It looked ****! Didn't even look 3D, it actually looked like really flat 2D images placed at different distances. Like paintings on panes of glass placed small distances apart. Really cheap. And no where near as realistic looking as regular 2D.
But 15 minutes into Gravity and i was transfixed. The 3D actually added to the visual experience and looked clean, crisp, and seamless. Very unlike any 3D i'd seen or heard about to date.
Visually it was stunning and the 3D really gave you a feeling of depth and pulled you right into the environment. And the film itself was completely gripping and nail-bittingly intense.
The whole thing plays out brilliantly from beginning to end with literally only 3 actors ever visible on screen. Only one short massively cheesy, over sentimental scene insultingly crowbarred into the middle of the 3rd act almost ruined it for me and without this one moment, in my opinion, we'd be talking about one of the greatest movies ever made but it really was too much for me to swallow. Bit of a shame but one small blot on an otherwise perfect movie experience.
If you get the chance go see this and see it at the cinema in 3D or people will be telling you for years to come how you missed out and "it's just not the same on DVD/BluRay".
I give Gravity a 4.5/5
Hollywood's burning need for saccharine, over sentimental, bull-**** cost it a perfect 5 (a score i could give to maybe 8 or 9 films ever made).
