Anyone seen this?
I didn't like the first two in this series, I mean, where's the gothic feel, where's the darkness?
And don't get me started on the costumes for Bane and Catwoman! I wish Tim Burton had done these, at least he was more
true to the comics, and Catwomans costume was VERY nice!!! :p
And Ann Hathaway as Catwoman?? WTF???

Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito and Christopher Walken actually fit as the characters they portrayed!

I know, Batman doesn't quite hold up these days, but Batman Returns still is quality!

I love the old Tim Burton versions. They had a real comic-y feel and the whole design of the sets and costumes was fantastic but these new ones aren't supposed to be like that and why would we want them to be? The Burton ones have been done and the franchise needed a completely different retelling or there'd be no point so i think the "new" ones are excellent in that respect. I've never been much of a fan of Christian Bale and in the first film especially i found his ridiculous 'Batman voice' a little too silly to swallow. He brings no charm to the role and has turned Bruce Wayne into a quite unlikeable character (much like himself). The first film was so so and i think they moved slightly too far away from the fantasy side of it all but the 2nd one largely due to Heath Ledger's masterful portrayal of the joker is an excellent film and might i say one of the first "super-hero" films worth watching in a dozen years. Ledger bought back the dark, creepy element that Batman badly needs. The last film to capture that in my opinion was Barman Returns with the brilliant portrayal of the Penguin by Danny DeVito and Pfeiffer's unforgettable Catwoman. Altho i loved Nicholson as the Joker Heath Ledger was far superior and redefined a seemingly unredefinable character. I went to watch The Dark Knight ready to scoff and snort at the reimagining of The Joker (how dare Heath Ledger attempt to walk in the great Jack Nicholson's shoes?!) but i was quickly silenced by the end of his first scene. It was spellbinding. Masterful. I've never been so captivated by a performance in a 'non-serious' film before and his posthumous Oscar was well deserved.

This new one i haven't seen yet but when i first saw the pictures of Catwoman (and saw who was cast) i wasn't impressed. I've seen one or 2 trailers and i've yet to be convinced.

I'm probably the only person on Earth who thought The Dark Knight was ****, but I agree with Tundra. No Batman has been better than Michael Keaton, and I'm sorry but just because Heath Ledger died doesn't make him a better Joker than Jack Nicholson. No way in hell in my opinion.

It's getting silly, hasn't Spiderman rebooted twice in the last 10 years? And same for Hulk? Come with with some new ideas FFS. I didn't mind Batman or Superman because it had been a good decade or two since their last films, but it's just getting silly now.

I also quite like Christian Bale, but can't stand his Batman voice.

I agree about Ledgers performance, he had that crazy Joker attitude, much like in the comics, which made Nicholsons portrayal just a 20s mobster with make up.
What I felt was missing in these new ones was the dark mood that's typical of Batman, the struggle of fear and creepyness if you get my drift.
The idea to make the films into a more realistic scene wasn't the best move imo, but I guess that's just the kid in me, I don't know.
I actually quite like Bale in certain roles, like the Machinist and American Psycho, as Bruce Wayne, not good, but not bad either, as Batman though?
Even Val Kilmer was better!

His death had nothing to do with it. It was an incredible performance. I was all ready to hate it and also thought people were raving about it just because he was dead and i refused to believe anyone could better Nicholson but then i went to see it and he blew me away. And i'm not one of these people who just loves everything i see. Quite the opposite. It takes a lot to impress me. I'm just not sure how anyone can see that performance and say 'it wasn't very good'. I find that truly shocking.

It was fine, nothing wrong with it, but in my opinion Jack Nicholson is a better actor and did a better Joker. I'm 90% sure if he hadn't died, it wouldn't have been so critically acclaimed. It's like all films these days - shouting and being covered in blood doesn't make something scary (apart from to stupid Americans.) What you CAN'T see and have to imagine is what makes things more realistic. Just like Star Wars - it showed just enough to tell the story, but left a lot to your imagination. You don't need to see shitty CGI graphics of huge worlds.

Couldn't agree more!

Jack Nicholson is of course a better actor. No question. But i will say watching the original Batman recently, i wasn't as impressed with his Joker as i was when i was younger. A lot of it is quite silly. It's still good but not as good as i remember.
Ledger's performance was being hailed as something great by critics everywhere before his death.
In most scenes Ledger is not shouting. He speaks quite softly for most of it. I'd say Nicholson shouts more.

It's close.
I thought Ledgers performance was one of the best 'acting performance' by anyone in a number of years. He played the character of genius villian/nutcase brilliantly.
I'm going to see the new film soon but straight away am disapointed by how small Bane is. He should be **** off great big thing.

As Pete quite rightly states, Hedgers performance as the Joker was being quietly acclaimed before his death as something special. It was spooky to watch such an amazing performance knowing he had passed but at the same time it was still a great performance whether he was alive or not.

I personally don't think you can even compare the two roles, they were two such completely different films that required two completely different actors, each was perfect for the films they were in, the only similarity between the two was the characters name.

Nicholson is one of my all time favourite actors and undoubtedly brilliant, pity we'll never know just how good Ledger could've been. Looking forward to seeing the latest Batman.

Just reading up on the Batman franchise on Wikipedia,

Batman 1989 budget: $35,000,000

The Dark Knight Rises 2012 budget: $250,000,000

I was a massive Bat Nerd in the 80's had all the comics and loved the films. But there is something about the Nolan version that leaves me a little cold, can't quit put my finger on it. Maybe its Christian Bale...I won't be flocking to the cinema to see like I was with the Avengers

I personally don't see the adulation thats heaped upon the Dark Knight, its an good film with a outstanding performance by Ledger. I find it too long by about 30 mins and there was no need for Two Face. It almost suffers he same problem as Spiderman 3 of too many villans. I also find it ridiculously violent for a 12 certificate

So I saw the Dark Knight Rises on Saturday. I actually quite enjoyed it, not bad at all. A few comments (don't worry no spoilers) :

1) Cat Woman is ****. Sorry but I wish these Hollywood morons would stop putting 6 stone glamorous women in action films. You couldn't even pick up a gun, let alone fire it. Imagine the uproar if the bad guy in a film was an 8 stone pretty boy. If you want a bad ass woman in a film, use a bad ass woman!

2) I thought Bane was ****. Back to my original point - to a stupid person, yes the 'mask' and ridiculous accent is scary. Anybody normal just thinks "what the **** is that on his face" and "why is he talking like that?" Piss poor Darth Vader wannabe.

3) The plane bit at the start is nearly as stupid as the similar scene in Hulk. I want to see feasible action please.

Other than those, I thought it was good.

I loved it.

Wasnt as much fun as the other two, but i like the direction of the film. Reminds me of 1970's films that run simular yet counter to film form. Not as simple as the A to B to C strategy employed by corperate Hollywood. I'd like to see more films like this.

5 Stars

Your knowledge of film makes you the Barry Norman of the group for sure Grant. But what we all want to know, is.....................................................does cat woman get em' out!
