Yep the footer is the cardboard under the figures legs, SKU is a code which identifies a part of a product (serial codes etc), some early figures have numbers or letters printed on them.

As far as I am aware the SKU footers indicate a much earlier release, there are also different coloured footers that indicate where they were packaged (think a white footer indicates Taiwan from memory)
