Hi guys,

Anyone else been asked for photo ID on PayPal? Or are they picking on me??

My account has been limited until I explain some recent transactions, provide photo ID and a bank statement with an address on??

Bram

Yes I got exactly the same , had to send in a picture and recent utilities bill
Mine was some think to do with lifting a limit on how much money I can receive
Was yours the same , my limit is £1900 and because I was close to that , I needed the id to lift it

Pretty sure I had to do that at some point - I think it is just down to the amounts going through the account.

WTF?? Guys be very, VERY careful about providing any sort of photo ID via email to institutions like Paypal. I have issues sending this sort of sensitive documentation through to Government bodies let alone a corporate one.

Quick google search found that quite a few people simply called Paypal and verified themselves over the phone by providing a date of birth to the operator. If companies such as PP can find an easier way to conform to required laws by canvasing their customers for emailed info they will do it. Once these documents leave your computer they are out there for ever. I've even been told not to leave scanned copies of licenses ect on my computer in case of being hacked.

If I receive a request of this type from Paypal and can't resolve it any other way then I'll be simply not using their service, ease of use be damned.

I had to do this also, when they received everything they said it would take a couple of days to lift the limit while they verify my documents, I requested to have it escalated and spoke to a manager. I informed the manager that a case would be opened against me on eBay if I didn't pay in the next couple of hours. They then lifted the limit on the a/c in 20 mins. The whole eBay story was fictitious but did the trick

Bram I called PayPal , and there was nothing I could of done without sending these in , I just took a photo on my phone and sent it in , easier than other options

Yeah i went through this. It was a massive pain in the arse due to the fact that i had no passport or driving licence or birth certificate at the time.
I ended up scanning some bank statements and official letters etc.

wow this must a very new thing as ive never had heard of that or had to provide a photo for lifting a limit and it was just 9 months ago i lifted the limit to thousands per month on a new ebay account i opened for my misses all that was required was bank verification via the £1 deposit method , if this comes up in future i will not be sending a genuine photo of me for security purpose thats for sure ,thats overkill on thier behalf

I had to do this recently also........Paypal are going to be sharing information with the Inland Revenue and targeting ebayers.

This started in the US and looks like the UK is following

I think it's a good thing for large businesses dodging tax but not great for ebay going forward for anyone who just wants to sell their surplus bits & bobs which is how ebay started

I have called them this morning as they said my photo ID and statement copy with address on was illegible.

I have asked them to delete the files and send me confirmation that they have done so.

I asked them why they need photo ID if they are never actually going to see me or use it. I told them that I wasn't comfortable with them having this information if all they need is proof of address!!

Surely they can just check the voting information?

I asked if there was any other way and he advised me that passport or driving license is the only way.

My problem is that I don't by and sell like a trader or even have a business account, I only use it to pay for stuff for my personal collection and when I need to sell bits off to buy others. I have another account anyway.

my business pypal account requested this info about 2/3 years ago. I believe its fairly standard procedure. I remember the scan I sent was too high def for them, I think they must have had some hideous old computer system...

but they didnt let me know immediately it wasnt suitable, their comms were appalling..

bloody weird ! i have a long standing 13+ year old ebay account with near 4k feedback which i only use for buying now since last summer which had been changed to business account by mistake around 2007ish and yet from then till now i have never been asked for any photo id at all . and at least 7 or 8 of those 12 months in the years after 2009 i was selling on my used goods to the tune of between £500.00 - £1000.00 per month ,strange :? and yet people with personal accounts selling little or nothing are being asked for photo id , i just assumed it was for security purpose to ellimante scammers and not for a tax purpose or i would have been asked

If it wasn't for guys saying this has been going on for years and that they had spoken to paypal about this I would assume it was a scam. Don't understand why they need photo Id. You don't need photo id to open q bank account. Why is this any different?
