The galactic empire did destroy aldearan with the death star, and despayre in the eu expanded universe, but that was all provoked by the rebels. The imperial stormtroopers killed owen lars and beru lars (luke skywalker's aunt and uncle) alongside the jawas, for merely associating with the robotic droids R2D2 and C3PO. There is no question that the sith/the galactic empire did many evil and morally questionable deeds and things.
However, the first death star was being built in construction 3 years after the phantom menace, in the star wars book the rogue planet. The plans were alreayd completed by the genosians and count dooku gave them to darth sidious during star wars episode 2 the AOTC. At the end of episode 3 ROTS, we see darth vader, darth sidious, and governor grand moff tarkin hanging out overlooking the first death star's construction. That was the same first death star that we see in episode 4 a new hope. Now, there are those who would say that the rebels were waging a just war because they empire destroyed alderaan. However, that was all provoked by the rebels. It was done to spite and interrogate princss leia.
Some would say that the death star plans were being built long before the rebel alliance had ever existed, therefore they would've destroyed alderaan anyways, to keep the local star systems in line through fear. Palpatine probably had the death star built to defend it from future rebels. He always talks about "i have foreseen this". He probably buit the death star because he had forseen the rebel alliance's existence. So, yes, most world leaders do arm themselves against opposition, too.
That arguement is invalid. The truth and the reality is, the death star's destruction of alderaan was done to spite princess leia. No rebel alliance waging a galactic civil war, nobody is harmed.
Just because one side has commited an evil atrocitiy that does not make their other, opposing side good in any way shape or form. The allied powers saved tens of millions of lives from nazi germany and imperial japan, so allied war crimes, despite many evil atrocities done in the name of the allies (such as soviet pillaging of german cities during the second world war, massacring of POWs). Allied war crimes do not justifty the axis powers. We all know that the axis powers were an abomination and a threat to the entire world, so there's no need to clarify on that. Saying that the rebels were waging a just war because the empire killed owen and beru lars and the jawas and destroyed alderaan is a ridiiclous statement, because it's like saying that Hideki Tojo or Hitler was waging a just war just because the allied did a few bad stuff/things.
Also, Padme Amidala had no idea about the death star either way, yet she still refused to join her husband darth vader/anakin skywalker and to rule the galaxy with him. Her son Luke Skywalker did just the same. Luke never said, "ill never join you and destroy planets with you father". why didn't padme and luke join anakin/vader?
The empire also had no plans of destroying any planets with the second death star too. The only reason that the empire was evil was because they got rid of democracy. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for democracy. but there are 2 kinds/types of dictatorships in this world. Benevolent dictators/enlightened desposts are not terribly evil, but true tyrannicald dictators like stalin and hitler were, and are, very truly evil. A tyrant-type dictator would commit genocide, slavery, mass murder, and other stuff like that. A lesser/benevolent dictator/enlightened despost may not be the nicest ruler that U can have, but trust me, almost everybody will leave a moderatley comftorable life under that kinda ruler/dictator.
The rebels rebelled because palpatine obtained a position of nobility (the emperor), and he probably used his absolute power for higher taxes, trade restrictions, imperial control of buisnesses, and stuff like that, boring political crap. So, he used his death star that he had built against them. The rebels provoked him into being an "evil evil tyrant-style dictator", while normally he wouldn't have been that way.
Besides, what other imperial atrocities happened in the EU Expanded universe? Mace Windu said that the opression of the sith (opression=tyranny) will never return, and darth sidious said that the sith will rule the galay once more, impyling that they once ruled the galaxy as tyrants in the past. All of that had happened long before the death star was even a thought, which was in the event of the prequels. The sith empires were not evil in star wars just because of the death star. They did other things. But what did they do, exactly??? There was a pre-prequel era where the sith never had the death star but were still considered tyrants and opressors.
My point is, the Galactic Empire under Darth Vader and Darth sidious may have done similar so called "opressive" "evil" or "tyrannical" things that the pre-prequel sith empire era did, but we aint show that explicity. The death star's usage was a retaliation against the rebels.
So, who else agrees with me that the rebel alliance in star wars was waging an unjust war against the galactic empire? All speculation and all opinions are allowed in this debate. Correct me if im wrong on a few details too. A free, open, polite discussion is strongly encouraged here by me. Let's discuss our thoughts on the rebels vs. the empire war, whether or not it was a just war or not....
