Just saw this too.

GAME OF THRONES CREATORS DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS TO WRITE AND PRODUCE A NEW SERIES OF STAR WARS FILMS

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today," said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

"In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we've been dreaming of it ever since," Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. "We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."

No release dates have been set for the new films, and there have (thankfully) been no sightings of White Walkers around Lucasfilm.

This from Bob Iger today:

While Benioff and Weiss would seem to be prime candidates to create a live-action Star Wars TV series given their success in building HBO's Emmy-winning genre hit Game of Thrones, Iger used his time with investors Tuesday to explain why they'd be fronting a new trilogy for Disney's film unit.

"Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we've actually been talking to them for a long time," Iger said. "To my knowledge they didn't express interest in creating a series. They have an idea for a number of films and at some later date I'm sure we'll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there."

Very exciting news, and as a big Game Of Thrones fan I couldn't be happier with this choice. They seem really well suited to explore 'ancient' times, the Old Republic era perhaps.

It should also be noted that these seeds being sown may not be manifesting as movies for some considerable time, Game Of Thrones doesn't finish till 2019, and there is also a Kenobi movie rumoured to be directed by Stephen Daldry, and so perhaps this new trilogy is a good few years away.

There are people out there who haven't watched GoT?! Kind of shocked by that ...

D+B have done a great job with GoT but their best work was when they were using GRRMs book content, and since the lazy git stopped writing the books the show quality has suffered a fair bit. That doesn't mean they can't write independently of course. I'm pretty hopeful about this, it sounds like they've got some original ideas, rather than more of the same OT/PT related stuff.

Before everyone get's too excited, remember that the TV series is based on a book by George RR Martin. The TV series is great, and the GOT writers have done a an excellent adaptation. I'm sure it will work out just fine, but do bear in mind it is not really their own invention.

GoT is great yeah. But latter seasons suffer in pacing issues and weird character choices, both necessary biproduct from tying a huge number of stories together for closure. geographical distance is no longer a theme in season 5+

If any of you remember the old Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone books and trying to recapture those kind of stories in your own adventure books, you'll know how hard it is to keep so many storylines we'll knit. I had a lot of killings in mine too. Just like GoT

I much prefer the diverging season 1-4 rather than the converging season 5+

But even so. It is a great show.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that at least one of these projects won't get to production or will have director(s) changed to 'a safe pair of hands'.

I'm really pleased about this. Two of my favourite things in TV and film coming together. These are two badass writers and create such emotial highs and lows in their writing!

Damn, unfortunately I have watched Game of Thrones so I'm unable to post on Facebook the fact that I'm in the 1% who hasn't seen it to show everyone how cool I am

They should incorporate some of their stories from GoT into Star Wars. Say like, a great swordsman who loses a hand.

I watched the first two episodes of the first series. I was bored shitless. It's like a soft core porno with fantastic production values. But if I want porn, there are better places to look (apparently) and the plot was just dull. The missus loved it though. She watched all of the series.

I also gave up on the Walking Dead after 3 or 4 series. I just got bored when the govenor came in. I was sat there waiting for something to happen and yet it was just episode after episode of monotony. Maybe it was all 'character development' but i diubt it. I still have about 80 episodes on sky plus, not sure i'll ever get round to watching them though.

Now that's made me think twice about watching it, don't think i'll bother then, pornhub vids probably even has better stories too.

The only two series iv'e ever got into was Smallville which was ****ing amazing in the last 2 or 3 series, until the very disappointing last series which was a bit boring and a real letdown but I had to watch it all because I was already invested and had to finish off 10 years of watching the damn thing. And my favourite series of all time is without a doubt Breaking Bad, the only series iv'e ever watched where I loved every episode from beginning to end, and also the only series iv'e seen twice.
